Prepare for Ramadan

from
http://www.dhiislam.com/eng/?p=4135
"When the month of Ramadan begins, the gates of Paradise are opened
and the gates of (Hell) Fire are closed and the devils are chained."(Bukhari)
With fantastic imagery this hadith informs all Muslims that the month of
Ramadan is a special month unlike others During the 30-odd days of
Ramadan, which falls in August of this year, Muslims all over the world
will join together  and strive to worship Allah.
One way in which many will consciously try to improve their Islam in the
month is through prayer, since there are rewards and invocations for doing so.
For example, relates Abu Huraira "Whoever establishes prayers during the
nights of Ramadan out of sincere faith and hoping to attain Allah's rewards,
all his past sins will be forgiven."
Muslims will also fast during the month from dawn to sunset. "Oh you who
believe! Fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you,
that ye  many learn piety and righousness" (Q2:183)
Allah adds,"...And it is better for you that ye fast, if ye only knew." (Q 2:184)
Indeed the benefits of fasting are many. We learn Taqwa (God-conscousness)
and self-restraint, we know what it is to feel hunger and deprivation, we
unknowingly increase our health as doctors have proven and so on...
Ramadan though is not just about fasting and praying in themselves.
These are the first steps in trying to purify one's soul and increasing
one's Im'aan, which is the real goal. Forgetting school or work problems,
and concentrating on oneself and improving one's relationship with
Allah is the true purpose.
"Ramadan is the (month) in which the Quran was sent down, as a guide to
mankind and a clear guidance and judgement (so that mankind will distinguish
from right and wrong).." (Q 2:183) We actively learn this right and wrong by
controlling our thoughts, our speech, our behavior and by avoiding evil. Each
Muslim along with praying and fasting, must also refrain from hurting others,
from swearing, from taking in harmful things, etc.
Along with being a strong personal Deen for the individual, Islam is also
Practical and designed for the people as a whole to satisfy their needs and
promote happiness. This is why Muslims pray the Tarweeh prayers in Jama'ah
why Mosques hold special community dinners inviting everyone, and why
the Day of Eid is so special. You can feel the love of Allah between Muslims
all through the month. Nowhere is brotherhood  so much a part of worship.
If you visit the mosques late at night during Ramadan and see all the devoted
people standing together praying to the Almighty, you would never have cause
to doubt the power of Islam.
Unfortunately though, we sometimes deviate from the true meanings.
The designation of the first day of Ramadan is argued upon endlessly by
different groups,to the extent that Muslims in the same community
will start fasting on different days and thus celebrate Eid at different times.
We ignore the Quranic injunction to "...hold fast altogether, by the rope
which Allah (stretches out for you), and be not divided amongst yourselves."
(Q 3:103)
We should remember all the Muslims and remember the true purpose of
These events we hold. "O mankind! We created you from a single (pair)
of a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that ye may
know each other..." (Q 49:13) Our culture is Islam first. Let us not forget
this and wipe out any kind of racism or prejudice that exists within ourselves.
Ramadan, as opposed to something that  divides, can even be used as an
effective Daw'ah tool for Muslims and Non-Muslims alike. An atmosphere
of warmth, food and piety can truly go a long way! When the long-awaited
Eid arrives, it is almost always celebrated by everyone in the community.
Mostly it is a joyous time of celebration and thankfulness. But Eid too can
deviate into a display of fashions and cars. For a few Muslims it is the only
occassion they come to the mosque (except for the other Eid) and it is looked
upon as a ritual duty. The Eid Khutbah is never heard as people leave or get up
to socialize.
In growing up, Ramadan was a time when all the Muslims in our community
would come together and share Islam. Perhaps somewhere along the way we
have lost this true remembrance of Allah in all that we do. The need to learn
about Islam and to strive has been lost to culture, bid'ah and straying.
Communties need to recognize these problems and develop effective target
solutions for them. They are not residual effects, but are symptoms of growing
problems that will get worse. Would we be following Islam as we do if the
Prophet (SAW) was with us today? As a community or as individuals? Would
we spend Ramadan in the same way if we knew it was our last (Audhu'billah)?
Would so many of us remain ignorant of our deen and our own souls? Or
would we ask forgiveness and start again? May Allah forgive us and guide us all.
Ameen.
"When My servants ask thee concerning Me, I am indeed close (to them):I listen
to the prayer of every suppliant when he calleth on Me: let them also, with a
will, listen to My call, and believe in Me: that they may walk in the right way."
(Q 2:188)

Maldives Government to Introduce New Measures to Consolidate Expatriate Record Keeping

 21 June 2011, Ref: 2011-447

The Cabinet has today finalized a range of measures to consolidate and efficiently organize records on expatriate workers in the Maldives.
These measures include building a new expatriate information system, and developing new infrastructure for the information system to be used in the Ministry of Human Resources, Youth and Sports and the Department of Immigration and Emigration.

In developing the infrastructure, the Cabinet assigned the National Centre for Information Technology (NCIT) to oversee the agreement between the Department of Immigration and Emigration and Nexbis of Malaysia to install a new border control system in the Maldives.
The Cabinet also mandated the regulation of information system used in different institutions for expatriate record keeping to NCIT.
Measures decided to strengthen expatriate record keeping include selecting a joint team between the President’s Office and NCIT to coordinate security of the expatriate information systems used in different institutions.
These measures also include creating a data map to standardize expatriate records management between relevant government agencies.
In addition, the Cabinet today decided to craft a single expatriate record keeping framework for government agencies and introduce special measures to validate the authenticity of records in the system.
In today’s meeting, the Cabinet approved the registration of South Asia Initiative to End Violence Against Children (SAIEVAC) in the Maldives.
SAIEVAC is a joint initiative between the governments of SAARC member countries, relevant UN agencies, and other international agencies with a vision that all children, girls and boys, throughout South Asia enjoy their right to an environment free from all forms of violence, abuse, exploitation, neglect and discrimination.
Speaking on the matter registering SAIEVAC in the Maldives, Cabinet members noted the absence of a regional body to protect child rights in the South Asia region, and promote the implementation of SAARC conventions and protocols on child protection.
They underlined that registering such a body in the Maldives, while a Maldivian serves as the Secretary-General of SAARC, would demonstrate the Maldivian government’s commitment to protect children and child rights.

Bus stops, stands set up in Maldivian capital

“A bus stop only has a post with a sign written as ‘bus hutti’ [in local Dhivehi language]. We will set up bus stands after determining the number of people who wait for buses at the bus stops. Despite the fact that we’ve only set up a trial bus stand near Nalahiya Hotel, we’ll establish more after the trial,” the official said.

The official, who revealed that the company expects to begin the service next week, said 15 bus stops would be established in Male before beginning the service.

The buses are set to initially use two routes to travel from Villingili ferry terminal to Hulhumale ferry terminal; the first route consists of Orchid Magu and Fareedee Magu while buses would use Majeedee Magu and Ameenee Magu as the second route.

The official, however, said the initial routes would be changed after sometime.

“We’ll change the routes for trial,” the official said.

MVK, which will charge Rf5 per passenger, will use 10 buses to provide the service from 6am to 12am every day, the official added.

Parliament endorses Gasim as representative to JSC

MALE, June 15 (HNS) – The parliament has selected Maamigili MP Gasim Ibrahim as its representative at the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).

Earlier in today’s parliament sitting, MDP Parliamentary Group Leader Moosa ‘Reeko’ Manik proposed the name of Machangolhi-North MP Mariya Ahmed Didi, which was backed by Galolhu-North MP Eva Abdulla.

The name of Maamigili MP Gasim Ibrahim was proposed by Villufushi MP Riyaz Rasheed and seconded by Kuda Huvadhoo MP Ahmed Amir.

At today’s parliament sitting, 38 members voted in favour of Gasim while 36 rejected his nomination. Only one member abstained.

While 36 members voted in favour of Mariya’s nomination, 37 voted against her. Only one member abstained.

Speaking to VTV after the vote, Gasim, who vowed to work according to the constitution and the principles of Islam and without any influence, said the parliament showed its desire to keep the judiciary independent.

Gasim thanked all the MPS, especially the independent members, whom he said, voted for him despite the power of the ruling MDP in the parliament.
“I know that those who didn’t vote for me were my friends too. But that’s what would happen where there’s no three-line whip or in a multi-party system,” he said.

The position reserved for an MP in JSC became vacant as the parliament Monday voted 38-34 in favour of a no-confidence motion against Ungoofaru MP Dr Afrasheem Ali, who represented the parliament at the commission.

AFC CUP 2012

Male: Tajikistan and the Maldives played out a goalless draw at the National Stadium in the Maldivian capital on Wednesday as the 2012 AFC Challenge Cup qualifiers brought the curtain down on their successful Group C campaigns.

Both teams had already guaranteed their place next year’s final by defeating Cambodia and Kyrgyzstan, with the Indian Ocean islanders winning 4-0 and 2-1 respectively and the Tajiks recording 3-0 and 1-0 victories over the same opposition.

With nothing to separate the two sides in Friday’s final fixture,  top spot in Group C was determined by goal difference and it was the Maldives who boasted the better ratio, claiming first place in the standings with a plus five GD compared to the plus four registered by the inaugural AFC Challenge Cup champions.
