Parliament endorses Gasim as representative to JSC

MALE, June 15 (HNS) – The parliament has selected Maamigili MP Gasim Ibrahim as its representative at the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).

Earlier in today’s parliament sitting, MDP Parliamentary Group Leader Moosa ‘Reeko’ Manik proposed the name of Machangolhi-North MP Mariya Ahmed Didi, which was backed by Galolhu-North MP Eva Abdulla.

The name of Maamigili MP Gasim Ibrahim was proposed by Villufushi MP Riyaz Rasheed and seconded by Kuda Huvadhoo MP Ahmed Amir.

At today’s parliament sitting, 38 members voted in favour of Gasim while 36 rejected his nomination. Only one member abstained.

While 36 members voted in favour of Mariya’s nomination, 37 voted against her. Only one member abstained.

Speaking to VTV after the vote, Gasim, who vowed to work according to the constitution and the principles of Islam and without any influence, said the parliament showed its desire to keep the judiciary independent.

Gasim thanked all the MPS, especially the independent members, whom he said, voted for him despite the power of the ruling MDP in the parliament.
“I know that those who didn’t vote for me were my friends too. But that’s what would happen where there’s no three-line whip or in a multi-party system,” he said.

The position reserved for an MP in JSC became vacant as the parliament Monday voted 38-34 in favour of a no-confidence motion against Ungoofaru MP Dr Afrasheem Ali, who represented the parliament at the commission.
